coronavirus disease of 2019, caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV2, started in China late 2019 and has since spread world wide. It causes severe acute respiratory syndrome. The Common Cold, MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome - 2012), SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome – 2002) and the Present COVid-19 are all caused by Corona Virus. This is a zoonotic disease is one that begins in animals and is transmitted from animals to people.
As this is Novel Corona Virus, more and more people are susceptible in the current pandemic conditions. As people are not immune to this new virus, public health measures like social distancing greatly help in checking the number of infections.
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) Test known as RT-PCR detect virus in the sample by amplifying viral genetic material to detectable levels. It is usually done within a few days of exposure and around the time that symptoms may begin. The other is Rapid Antigen Test [RAT] Or Rapid Diagnostic Test [RDT]. It detects viral proteins known as antigens. These tests are cheaper than PCR and will offer results more quickly, although they are generally less accurate.
Transmitting through air, COVID-19 is causing a havoc in several countries. However, the mortality rate in India is comparatively low when compared to rest of the world. Use of mask, maintaining social distance of 02 meters, proper hygienic measures like washing hands, taking nutritious diet, proper medication, if tested positive can alone bring down the case load.
Vaccination should be done at the earliest with no inhibitions. Persons with co-morbidities may have side effects more than those with no health issues, but this should not inhibit vaccination. The Government of India, is striving relentlessly to contain the virus, and the final outcome of the result lies in the hands of general public.
Hoping for the best
